Government of Bangladesh

Bangladesh  has  now  switched  on  to  a parliamentary form of government.  It  remains  accountable  to  the  people through a parliament  elected  by direct popular vote. The transparency of all  its  transactions  is  ensured  by  Parliamentary  Standing Committees  for  various  ministries, consisting of members from all parties,  which  act  as  watchdogs over the government. The Prime Minister,  who  represents  the  majority in the House and other Ministers,  drawn  from  MP's  of  the majority party, are responsible to the Parliament.

Politics of Bangladesh takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Bangladesh is the head of government, and of a multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament.

The Prime Minister of Bangladesh is, in practice, the most powerful political position in Bangladesh. The President of Bangladesh is considered senior to the Prime Minister, but holds a largely ceremonial role. The Prime Minister has effective control over the executive arm of government, and presides over the country's cabinet.

The Constitution of Bangladesh was written in 1972.
